A place for me to keep track of great songs I hear, especially while listening to internet radio.
Calvin Harris - “I’m Not Alone”
More euro-trash to get me through the day. HRO described it as “some sort of Euro-techno-bro-house music.” Awesome.
Ok boys and girls, I’m gonna get ethic for a second. My friend Imanta just recently sent me some stuff she’s been working on with her friend Agnese, and I have to say it’s really awesome (even more awesome if you’re Latvian). Anyway, what makes this good is the way they’re able to mix a traditional Latvian folk sound with more modern elements.
Have a listen for yourself over here.
I’m diggin’ this pretty hard tonight. It’s the perfect music for a spring that just won’t warm up or a winter that refuses to give up. Listen, download, and enjoy here.

Having grown up in Washington, DC (er, Silver Spring, MD - potato potahto) I remember the district used to have an amazing music scene with a very distinct sound. I think it’s safe to say that those days are completely over. For now.
(Aside: Kristaps Kreslins, owner of my favorite local watering hole Pharmacy Bar, has a theory that with a democrat back in office, the music scene will get stronger since more creative types will be attracted to the area. I hope he’s right!)
However, our love ‘em and hate ‘em like a sibling neighbors to the north have been experiencing an explosion of awesome local music, which also has its own distinct sound. For my own personal benefit, here’s a short list of some awesome bands coming out of Baltimore:
Hopefully I can catch some of these dudes (and dudettes presumably) around DC sometime soon.
I totally LOVE this song. It reminds me of a British version of Operation Ivy or maybe a maybe The Streets infused with G. Love. I don’t know, but it’s fucking bangin’. Banger. I feel like listening to this song and beating up a St. Vincent fan (a dude St. Vincent fan, of course). ‘Cause that’s how I roll.
Fake youtube video featuring the song here.
Myspace page with other songs as well here.
Namedrop that led me to look into them here.
Frankmusik - “Better Off As 2”
I heard this dude on some internet radio station a while back and then hipster runoff made fun of him today so I thought I’d note this. I love euro-trashy music.
If you didn’t know, I am hugely / unhealthily obsessed with Aretha Franklin. I have every single one of her records that were put out on Atlantic. She is amazing.
So, I’m listening to some RnB radio station today and they play one of the songs that always makes me go nuts. It’s “Since You’ve Been Gone” and it’s amazing. This version isn’t as good as the album version, but this video is all I got.
Enjoy!
I recently watched Tom Waits’ “Big Time” movie and got to googling this and that about my boy Tom. Anyway, I came to find out that one of his biggest influences was a guy named Lord Buckley, who famously performed at the Ivar Theatre Tom mentions so frequently. Anyway, I picked up one of his CDs and have to say it’s some pretty entertaining stuff. Basically, his thing is speaking in old jive.
Anyway, have a listen for yourself.
Paul Young - “Come Back And Stay”
I heard this on a flight to Seattle last weekend and thought it was pretty good at the time. I’m not feeling it as much right now, but I thought I’d note it anyway.
Florence And The Machine - “Dog Days Are Over.” I think I’m going to like this chick. A lot. - via that uber elite zine from across the pond
